A Lung Transplant Recipient Story #TellYourStoryTuesday

Yesterday for #TellYourStoryTuesday, we received the story of Daniel Brooks, double lung recipient.  When Daniel was three years old his lungs were damaged during a surgery.  In 2010, at the age of 19, Daniel was placed on the transplant waiting list.  Later that year, he received the double-lung transplant that he so desperately needed.  He had never been able to play basketball or go to the mall.  He told his Mom “I’m walking through the whole mall!”  In the winter of 2012, Daniel became very sick from an infection.  Sadly, on February 8, 2013 he passed away.

Daniel’s mother, Kim Brooks, continues to honor Daniel’s legacy, by hosting an annual Antique Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show and Fundraiser.  The money raised was donated to two (2) local organ recipients.   Kim Brooks knows first-hand about the expenses of medications, doctor visits, hospitalizations and travel.  She wants to give back and hopefully spread the word about organ and tissue donation.  She stated: “Donation and transplantation is a wonderful thing.  If it weren’t for someone doing that, I would not have had those three extra years with my son Daniel.  I hope his story will encourage everyone to register on the Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.  It’s as simple as clicking yes when you get or renew your driver’s license.”

Thank you Kim, for sharing Daniel’s brave story of life!  You can register today by going online to http://midsouthtransplant.org/donate/
