Organ Recovery Coordinator

Classification: Full-time
Working Hours: Office hours per policy or hours dictated by workload and 24/7 call schedule


• Licensed Registered Nurse, Critical Care Paramedic or Registered Respiratory Therapist with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in critical care or high acuity level emergency room or other organ recovery coordinator experience preferred
• Possess strong organization and interpersonal skills
• Effective communication and presentation skills
• Valid driver’s license, reliable automobile, and proof of automobile insurance


This position is responsible for approaching families for donation authorization, donor evaluation and clinical management, organ evaluation and allocation, and the surgical recovery and preservation of donated organs. This position is responsible for the paperwork associated with all activities related to the local organ donor and for the
importation of organs for our local transplant center(s). This position is responsible for assisting local transplant programs on the importation of organs.


• Oversees clinical management of donor under the direction/supervision of medical director or administrator on call
• Arranges for appropriate tissue typing, labs, tests and consults for organ-specific evaluations
• Coordinates surgical recovery with donor hospital operating room and organ recovery teams, both local and from distant centers
• Assists with donor surgery and donor maintenance in operating room
• Receives referral calls and obtains all necessary potential donor data to evaluate donor suitability and collaborates information with the pre-transplant coordinator/ surgeon at appropriate transplant institution
• Arranges for transportation for surgical recovery team to donor hospital
• Accompanies surgical retrieval team and provides necessary supplies and solutions for organ preservation,
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with donor hospitals, transplant surgeons, clinical transplant coordinators, local tissue and eye bank
• Enters referrals and donor data accurately into electronic software


• Frequently work for extended periods of time with few breaks
• Travel by personal automobile, limousine, and charter or commercial aircraft
• Carry a pager and a cellular telephone for business purposes
• Category 1 – Potential for occupational exposure
• Use of universal precautions as needed
