Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) must be certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and abide by CMS regulations. CMS says that organ procurement works best when a high-performing organization is in tune with the needs of a local community. As a local and independent organization, Mid-South Transplant Foundation recognizes and caters to the needs of our local area.
We represent an area with a 52% African American population. Our focus on this demographic has resulted in increased African American consent rates to donation from 27% in 2007 to 55% in 2012.
Of the 58 organ procurement organizations, MSTF ranks #1 in the continental United States for having the highest percentage of African American donors.
